Nowadays, SGdP is a global point of reference for the repair and conversion of all ship types, ro-pax vessel upgrades, as well as mid-range vessel construction projects. The shipyard’s portfolio includes famous clients and prestigious worldwide owners.

With qualified personnel and a skilled labor force, San Giorgio del Porto’s aim has always been to continue to meet the high expectations of Customers. All repairs and conversions are carried out in accordance with the rules of all Classification Societies, most of which have offices in Genoa.
The SGdP yard is located close to the downtown area and the airport, with hotels within walking distance, offering customers easy transfers, saving them time and money.
Directly connected to highway, the yard is next to the town center and to the Cristoforo Colombo Airport (9 km). SGdP, together with its sister company CNdM - Chantier Naval de Marseille, operates eight dry-docks and over 2 km of equipped repair quays. The shipyard is capable of handling the largest vessels and is perfectly positioned to support the needs of the maritime, offshore and renewable energy sectors, providing specialized service and assistance 24/7/365.
San Giorgio del Porto is a Genoa-based shipyard that was founded in 1928 as a ship maintenance workshop and foundry by Ferdinando Garrè, who went by the same name as the current CEO.
Due to bombing that destroyed the workshops during World War II, the shipyard was forced to relocate to northern Italy, where it engaged in the production of agricultural equipment. Only after the end of the war, was SGdP able to return to Genoa, where the shipyard expanded its range of activities over the years to include vessel reconversion.
While in the early years, the shipyard focused primarily on routine maintenance and repair operations (engaging in three main types of activity: mechanical, metal carpentry, and structural engineering), a glorious decade began after the war was over, in the 1950s.
SGdP used to specialize in propeller drive shafts and frequently had to work without tools that could substitute human efforts. Thus, it was often necessary to move huge weights by hand, or at best using hoists. This is a time when the shipyard was involved in an area that up until then was little known, i.e. the transformation of vessels. In this way, the company worked at a steady pace until the 1980s.
After the shipbuilding industry entered a crisis, the company experienced evolution as the range of operations changed and became more challenging. For this reason, SGdP decided to focus on advanced engineering, as well as safety and environmental issues, as well as new business segments.
Thanks to almost 90 years of experience and a staff consisting of naval architects, mechanical engineers, a highly skilled workforce and emergency response teams trained by specialized technicians, San Giorgio del Porto is nowadays a top-notch Mediterranean shipyard capable of assisting any type of vessel (cruiser, offshore, chemical and gas carrier, military ship, etc.) all over the world.
San Giorgio del Porto , together with its sister company Chantier Naval de Marseille(CNdM) is a one-stop solution for repair, conversion and refitting operations in the shipping industry. The Ship Recycling Consortium, composed of SGdP and Saipem, has operated key projects in the Green Ship Dismantling sector since 2012.
Ship repair and maintenance are the core business of the yards: from mid-range ships to the giants of the sea, SGdP and CNdM have the facilities, the necessary teams and the technical know-how to carry out any kind of repairs on all types of vessels.
In addition to standard repair and maintenance services, the shipyards also offer specialvalue-added options. Major engine and equipment makers are their regular partners and their have selected qualified service providers. Both shipyards are able to execute all kinds of work on vessel propulsion, ranging from removal of tail shafts and rudders to complete overhaul of thrusters or azipod in our workshops.
SGdP and CNdM, together with its partner T. Mariotti, are able to provide fully customized refitting services and conversion operations. Whether the owner wants to give a new look to his old vessel, renew or revamp existing areas, boost the ship’s capacity or improve its efficiency, their teams are able to design, manage and execute any project, regardless of its complexity.
The shipyards have strong expertise in applying all types of paint and the latest washing technologies are used, such as robotic vacuum blasting with ultra-high pressure water cleaning up to 3,000 bar for dustless hull or deck treatment. They also carry out such services as tank coating, engine overhauls, electrical works, as well as overhaul and repair of electric motors and alternators.
SGdP has decided to develop, in line with the European Regulation and Hong Kong Convention, a new branch of business specialized in ship dismantling and recycling. The first such project involved recycling and dismantling of the Costa Concordia cruise ship.
Strongly committed to QHSSE, SGdP and CNdM recognize the importance of providing high quality standards and consider as their primary focus to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for the shipyard’s staff and partners.
Thanks to their professionalism and organization, the shipyards invariably manage to promptly deliver any kind of project with the reliability, efficiency and response timeframe that their clients require. The pursuit of high quality, health, safety, security and environment standards is regarded as an essential factor in client satisfaction and an unavoidable duty in respecting everybody. The belief is that the only way to achieve durable success is to strive for quality and sustainability.
The shipyars operations relate to an environment where a broad range of inter-related activities is required, so over the years the experience has provided the tools to devise and implement a comprehensive QHSSE system. The staff is qualified by GTT to manage LNG membrane type repairs, and both companies offer the full range of specialized activities, including membrane tank testing, cryogenic piping, valve and pump overhauls through carefully selected qualified service providers and extensive network of subcontractors. As a minimum, the shipyards assure following priority actions that are necessary to optimize the activity control of the project, make it more efficient to reach higher standards, both in direct and indirect specific processes and in the general management:
- the compliance with all applicable laws and regulations within the country of our operation with particular reference to rules and quality standards;
